Compaq Computers was founded in 1982. Its purpose was to develop and sell computers and computer related products and services. The company is known to have produced some of the first computers that were IBM compatible. Compaq was the first company to reverse engineer, legally, the IBM Personal Computer. Through its revolutionary technology, Compaq emerged as the largest PC systems suppliers in the 1990s. The success did not manage to last long since its competitor HP managed to outperform it in 2001. Sales and financial struggles put the company in a difficult position and in 2002 it were acquired by HP. HP allowed the company to retain its brand name, Compaq, to serve the lower-end systems. However, it was discontinued in 2013.
